Show Notes:

In this episode, we talked about:

A sensory need can be a multitude of things; such as, sight, hearing, smell. The two main types of sensory needs are sensory seeking and sensory avoiding. Sensory processing disorder is more of the extreme of sensory needs, it does not mean that you are on the autism spectrum. It's a disconnect between your brain and the rest of your nervous system and how you take in certain sensory information. Your wiring is off.

If your child's sensory needs are disrupting your daily life, then Monique would recommend getting an Occupational Therapy evaluation.  A sensory checklist from Raising a Sensory Smart Child is a good resource.

Behavior, what does it look like, when is it happening are things that parents should be looking at when trying to see if the reaction is actually sensory. A sensory diet includes incorporating every two hours a rotation of physical, active play; a calming activity such as reading or nap; and then food. Parents can see if this diet actually helps behaviors. Be sure and journal what you're seeing and experiencing.

If you do the sensory diet and it doesn't work, you know that there is other stuff there and you move up to a higher level of investigation to figure out your child's needs.
