In the fight against Sex and Human Trafficking, this presentation is designed to provide a relevant and up to date understanding of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. This presentation will define sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, discuss the lifetime impact of trauma on the survivors, and provide a greater knowledge around best practices and appropriate ways to provide support. We will identify the signs of potential trafficking and sexual exploitation survivors and provide a comprehensive picture of the risk factors and vulnerabilities associated with this population.

Objectives: (1) This presentation will define “sex trafficking” and “complex trauma”, (2) This presentation will discuss and explore the nature of common trauma and complex trauma in survivors of sex trafficking, and (3) This presentation will address issues and warning signs to look out for in victims and survivors of sex trafficking and/or sexual exploitation

Rana Amini, Gladney UniversityRana Amini, MS, LPC, EMDR Trained, is a clinician at New Friends New Life, an agency that works to restore and empower the lives of women who have been sexually trafficked and exploited. Rana is a Licensed Professional Counselor and currently serves as the Clinical Program Director overseeing the clinical services, program implementation the adult women’s program and the ongoing development and training of the direct service staff. Previously, Rana served as Senior Mental Health Clinician at New Friends New Life, Crisis Intervention Specialist for Adapt Community Solutions and Mental Health Clinician at Resource Center. Rana has provided therapeutic services to a variety of populations but has spent her career dedicated to excellent care for at-risk and vulnerable populations.

Rana currently sits on the board for the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, Dallas Chapter, serving as the Scholarship chair and University Liaison. Rana has presented at a number of organizations on topics such as "Human Trafficking and Ways to Identify and Support Victims," "Sex Trafficking, Commercial Sexual Exploitation, & Complex Trauma," "The Impact of Complex Trauma on the Brain," and "Comorbidity of Suicidality and Individuals with Complex Trauma."
