  • about the 3 big complications of suicide grief
  • how to address the complications
  • how not to add complications
She will share how research based postvention, things each of us can do, can help those dealing with the complicated grief caused by suicide. We can help bring a light into their grief.

Speaker

Julie Compton - Gladney UniversityJulie Compton’s career has been spent working with children with emotional and behavioral disorders and the teachers who serve them. She began as a middle school teacher in a behavior unit where she stayed for 14 years.  From there she moved to serving as a district behavior specialist where she was able to work with students and their teachers, K-12.  Since retiring from public education, she does consult work with school districts, she teaches seminars nationally for the Bureau of Education and Research, and she serves as an “on call” trainer for Boys Town’s National Education Center.

However, all of this had not prepared her for the suicide of her 21-year-old son, Chantz. When he died, she found herself and her family in the unchartered waters of a very complicated kind of grief.  Thanks to a strong circle of caring friends, she found the support that she needed.

She brings to us what she has learned firsthand across the past 10 years of working through her own grief, that of her family, and then the families of other survivors. Julie now serves as a coordinator for a group that provides grief support for survivors of suicide.  She also is a trained volunteer for LOSS Team of Tarrant County.  LOSS exists as an early postvention resource to be “an instillation of hope” for those grieving a death by suicide. She understands that people want to help but are unsure how.
