Validation and acceptance are Kris’ therapy super-powers. Kris studied Psychology at Southern Nazarene University and Counseling Psychology at the University of Central Oklahoma. He received intense training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy through the Linehan Institute in 2011. As a supervising clinician for a mental health center in Oklahoma City, he was integral in developing the first outpatient DBT program for adolescents in the state of Oklahoma. He was appointed by Governor Mary Fallin to the Oklahoma Suicide Prevention Council. Kris believes deeply in sharing the human experience and that which is good, true and beautiful.

In this episode, we talked about:

  • DBT is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Helpful for people to find balance in their emotions, change behaviors and live a life worth living
  • DBT is a research based and art based therapy.
  • DBT serves a condition known as personality disorder, depression, anxiety, anger and eating disorders. It’s helpful with emotional and behavioral regulation.
  • If a therapist is interested in providing this therapy there is a therapy training center called Behavioral Tech.
  • DBT Certification is relatively new but there is a process for therapist to get this certification.
  • DBT Principals are east meets west. Thoughts and feelings are connected but also mixing in mindfulness and acceptance outside of our control.
  • The overarching purpose is for people to build lives worth living.
  • DBT has individual or family therapy as well as a DBT skills group.
  • The Four Skills that are taught are: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Emotional Regulation
  • Kris shared that he appreciates the trauma definition of “anything less than nurturing”.
  • Personality Disorders are not diagnosed until 18 years old.
  • TBRI and DBT tend to work well together.
